A woman was found dead inside a housing complex in Raniganj’s JK Nagar area of West Bengal’s Paschim Bardhaman district, prompting her children to allege that she was raped and murdered. Police have started an investigation, but no arrest has been made and the post-mortem report is awaited to establish the cause of death and whether sexual assault took place.
The woman’s body was recovered from a room in a housing complex located in the JK Nagar colliery area. She was found unclothed, according to the report. Police are treating the incident as an investigation and have not confirmed the allegations made by her son and daughter.
The body was recovered on Tuesday night from a residential complex near the Nimcha police outpost. The location has raised questions about how such an incident could take place close to a police facility. The Asansol-Durgapur Police Commissionerate is overseeing the investigation under Commissioner Pranab Kumar.
Investigators have collected and are examining CCTV footage from the area. Several people have been questioned, and a dog squad was used to examine the room and surrounding areas. Police are expected to rely on the post-mortem findings to determine the woman’s cause of death and whether there was evidence of sexual assault.
The woman lived alone in accommodation linked to a closed aluminium factory in the JK Nagar colliery area. She had been separated from her husband for several years. Her son works in Mumbai, while her daughter is studying in Chandigarh, according to the report.
The case has also drawn attention to the local policing structure. The officer currently in charge of the Nimcha police outpost, Nasrin Sultan, had previously been the officer-in-charge of the police station covering the area during the reported assault of a student at Durgapur Medical College. The reference has become part of the public discussion around the investigation, although the supplied report does not establish any connection between the two cases.
The woman’s family has said it informed local legislator and minister Agnimitra Pal as well as senior officials of the state government. The family has demanded the prompt arrest of those responsible and exemplary punishment if the allegations are proved. Police action following the post-mortem report and the examination of CCTV footage will determine the next stage of the investigation.
