Ranchi Gets 2,000-Strong Deployment for Durga Puja Crowd Control

Ranchi Durga Puja security personnel managing traffic near festival pandals

Ranchi has received a deployment of around 2,000 additional personnel as Jharkhand police expand security, crowd-control and traffic arrangements across the state for Durga Puja. The wider operation involves nearly 12,000 additional personnel in districts, including home guards, armed police and central security units.

According to details reported by Times of India, the state deployment includes around 6,750 home guards and 4,000 armed police personnel, along with several companies of the Rapid Action Police, the Rapid Action Force and the Central Reserve Police Force. Tear gas units and bomb detection and disposal squads have also been positioned for the festival period.

Ranchi’s deployment is expected to focus heavily on traffic management. Nearly half of the additional personnel assigned to the capital are traffic police, reflecting the pressure created by large crowds, temporary puja structures and restricted movement around prominent public locations.

The district has been divided into 10 zones to improve coordination between police and the administration. A district-level control room and four sub-control centres have been established to monitor law-and-order conditions and coordinate responses across the city.

Police personnel and magistrates will be deployed at 200 locations, including puja pandals. In addition, 44 teams led by police officers are conducting foot patrols at prominent places in Ranchi. A further deployment of magistrates and police personnel has been made at 32 locations in suburban and rural parts of the district.

The arrangements place crowd movement and road access at the centre of the city’s festival planning. Barricades have been erected at 163 locations to regulate traffic inside Ranchi. The restrictions are intended to manage movement around crowded areas, though they will also alter normal travel routes for residents, visitors, public transport users and commercial vehicles.

Heavy vehicles will be restricted from entering or moving through specified routes from 8 am until 4 am the following day. The extended restriction window is designed to keep larger vehicles away from areas experiencing peak festival activity and to reduce conflict between heavy traffic, pedestrians and visitors travelling to puja venues.

The deployment also brings together multiple layers of the security system rather than relying only on regular district police. Home guards and armed police are being supported by specialised units, while magistrates are being stationed alongside police teams at sensitive locations. This arrangement gives the administration both enforcement capacity and executive-magistrate oversight at crowded sites.

The police and district administration’s immediate priorities are maintaining public order, managing crowds and keeping traffic moving around the city’s major gathering points. The control rooms, zonal structure, foot patrols and fixed deployments are expected to remain the main coordination mechanisms during the festival period.
