Pune University Girls Hostel Safety Row Puts Campus Security Under Scrutiny

Pune University girls hostel safety protest involving women students outside the campus at night

Pune University girls hostel safety came under renewed scrutiny after more than 300 women students left their hostel premises and gathered on the road at around 3.25 am on Monday, protesting alleged misconduct by students from the university’s education department and demanding stronger security assurances from the administration.

The protest began at around 10.30 pm on Sunday after allegations that students from the education department had misbehaved with a woman student. The protesting students demanded an apology from those accused and sought a clear assurance that women living in the hostels would be protected on campus.

The students raised slogans against the university administration and its security arrangements after leaving the hostel premises in the early hours. The incident has brought attention to the way residential campuses manage safety complaints, access control and institutional responses when allegations involve students living or studying within the same university environment.

The university administration said it had taken the matter seriously in view of the safety of women students on campus. According to the administration, the university is filing a police complaint against the students concerned. It also said the access of both students to their academic department and hostel had been suspended with immediate effect.

The administration said the entire incident would be investigated by a high-level committee appointed by the vice-chancellor. It added that strict action would be taken against those found responsible after the inquiry. The university’s stated response places the police complaint, immediate suspension of access and the committee inquiry as the next formal steps in the case.

The allegations reported by the students have not, at this stage, been established through the inquiry. The university’s decision to initiate a police complaint and a high-level investigation means that the facts surrounding the alleged misconduct, the institutional response and any responsibility for lapses in campus security will be examined through those processes.

The episode also highlights the practical safety concerns that can emerge in large residential universities, where students depend on campus security systems and administrative mechanisms to respond to complaints. In this case, the scale and timing of the protest indicate that the issue moved beyond an individual complaint and became a wider concern among women residents of the hostels.

The university has not announced a completion date for the committee’s inquiry in the reported statement. The immediate developments to watch are the filing of the police complaint, the findings of the vice-chancellor’s committee and the university’s decision on further action against the students involved.
