Pune to Satara Railway Line Fully Doubled for Faster Travel

The Pune to Satara railway line has been fully doubled, marking a major milestone in the Pune–Miraj rail corridor project. This development is set to enhance travel speed and efficiency, benefiting both passengers and freight operations. The completion of the doubling work on the Shindawane–Ambale ghat section, a challenging segment with a 6-degree curvature, has been a pivotal achievement.

Previously, trains were restricted to speeds of 55 km/h due to the single-track configuration, leading to delays and operational bottlenecks. With the new double track in place, these issues are expected to be significantly reduced, improving punctuality and reliability. The doubling project spans a total of 280 kilometers, with 260 kilometers already completed. The final 20 kilometers, covering the Koregaon–Rahimatpur and Rahimatpur–Targaon sections, are expected to be ready by August 2025. Once fully operational, the double line will drastically enhance capacity, reliability, and turnaround time, benefiting lakhs of daily passengers and streamlining cargo transport through one of Maharashtra’s busiest rail networks.

The project, initially sanctioned at a cost of ₹2,480 crore, has seen an increase to ₹4,800 crore due to phase-wise execution and infrastructure upgrades over the last eight years. Despite the cost rise, the benefits are expected to outweigh the investment by enabling improved punctuality, faster train movement, reduced crossing wait times, and greater freight throughput. The strategic importance of the Pune–Miraj section cannot be overstated. It serves as a vital rail corridor connecting industrial, agricultural, and urban hubs in Western Maharashtra. The completion of the doubling work up to Satara is a major step toward seamless operations in the Pune–Miraj section, enhancing both passenger convenience and freight efficiency.

As the final stretch of the project nears completion, the inspection of the Shindawane–Ambale section is scheduled for June 17, marking a key milestone in the project timeline. The team is working with utmost commitment to ensure timely execution while maintaining safety and minimizing disruption. Once fully operational, the Pune–Miraj double line will not only enhance train mobility but also contribute to the development of sustainable and equitable transport infrastructure in the region, aligning with broader goals of creating zero-net-carbon, eco-friendly, and gender-neutral cities.
