Pune Road Accident Kills Bhosari Siblings on Old Highway

Pune road accident scene on the old Pune-Mumbai highway near Hotel Poona Gate

A 21-year-old man and his 17-year-old sister were killed after a speeding motorcycle allegedly rammed their two-wheeler from behind on the old Pune-Mumbai highway near Hotel Poona Gate on Sunday night, according to Dehu Road police. The crash occurred at about 9pm on October 11 as the siblings were returning home to Bhosari after visiting a temple.

The deceased have been identified as Kaushik Ravi Mulya, 21, and Rishita Ravi Mulya, 17, residents of Indrayaninagar in Bhosari. Police said the siblings had travelled to the Ghorawadeshwar temple near Somatane Phata before beginning their journey back home.

The collision took place in front of Hotel Poona Gate, on the old Pune-Mumbai highway, when another motorcycle hit their two-wheeler from behind. Both Kaushik and Rishita sustained serious injuries in the crash and were taken to Yashwantrao Chavan Memorial Hospital, which is run by the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation.

Kaushik died late on Sunday night while undergoing treatment, while Rishita succumbed to her injuries on Monday, the report said. Their deaths have left their family and the Bhosari locality mourning the loss of two siblings.

Kaushik was the son of Ravi Mulya, a tailor from Bhosari, and was studying in the second year at a private college in Akurdi. Rishita was a Class XI student. The siblings had been travelling together on the two-wheeler when the collision occurred.

The incident has again drawn attention to the risks faced by two-wheeler users on busy highway stretches passing through the Pune metropolitan region, where local traffic, inter-city movement and high-speed vehicles share the same road space. The old Pune-Mumbai highway is used by residents travelling between Bhosari, Somatane Phata, Dehu Road and surrounding areas.

According to the police account cited in the report, the motorcycle that struck the siblings was travelling at speed. The available report does not provide details about the condition of the road, the identity of the other rider, or any action taken in the case. Dehu Road police are handling the incident, while the siblings’ bodies were taken to YCM Hospital after the crash.

The deaths underline the consequences of rear-end collisions involving two-wheelers, which offer limited protection to riders and passengers. The next official steps in the case will depend on the police investigation into the collision and the circumstances surrounding the motorcycle that struck the siblings.
