Pune Ration Distribution Reaches Over 10 Lakh Cardholders, Figures Need Clarity

Pune ration distribution through a fair-price shop serving local beneficiaries

Foodgrain distribution under the National Food Security Act is under way for eligible beneficiaries across Pune district, including drought-affected talukas, with more than 10 lakh ration-card holders covered through 2,578 fair-price shops, according to a report by Pudhari – Pune.

The distribution network includes 1,887 shops in rural areas and 691 shops in urban areas. The report states that 54,328 ration-card holders are registered under the Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY), while 9,46,889 cardholders belong to the Priority Household (PHH) category. Beneficiaries in both groups are receiving foodgrains through the public distribution system.

For urban areas, the report lists an allocation of 147.75 metric tonnes of wheat and 98.50 metric tonnes of rice for AAY beneficiaries. For the PHH category, it records 4,145.35 metric tonnes of wheat and 2,723.75 metric tonnes of rice. Together, these figures amount to 7,115.35 metric tonnes for the two urban categories listed in the report.

The report also gives separate rural allocation figures. For rural AAY beneficiaries, it lists 1,043.944 metric tonnes of wheat and 616.876 metric tonnes of rice. For rural PHH beneficiaries, the reported allocation is 7,287.39 metric tonnes of wheat and 4,858.26 metric tonnes of rice.

However, the source text contains an unclear reference to 17,000 metric tonnes and subsequently states that the total allocation is 19,014.75 metric tonnes. The relationship between the 17,000-metric-tonne figure, the urban allocations and the rural figures is not explained, making the overall total difficult to independently establish from the supplied report.

The distribution is being carried out through the district’s fair-price shop network, covering both urban and rural beneficiaries. The report presents the programme as support for eligible households, including those in drought-affected talukas. The district-level allocation details and the unclear total require confirmation from the food and civil supplies administration before the figures can be treated as definitive.
