A 24-year-old student was detained after a speeding car allegedly driven under the influence of alcohol hit three to four two-wheelers near MIT College on Paud Road in Kothrud, Pune, on Thursday evening, with several riders reportedly suffering minor injuries.
The incident took place at around 8 pm on the road connecting the MIT College area with the Kothrud Depot. According to information provided by eyewitnesses to Sakal – Pune, the car struck multiple two-wheelers while travelling at high speed, creating confusion in the area.
After the collisions, local residents stopped the car and pulled the driver out of the vehicle. The residents subsequently handed him over to the Kothrud police. Police reached the spot after receiving information about the incident and began examining the circumstances surrounding the crash.
Kothrud police detained the driver, who was identified as a student of MIT College and a resident of the Sinhagad Road area. Senior Police Inspector Arun Ghodke said the youth appeared, at first sight, to have been driving after consuming alcohol. He was sent to a hospital for a medical examination to establish his condition.
The reported injuries were described as minor, but the exact number of injured people and the extent of their injuries were not formally confirmed in the available report. Police also said that no complaint had been filed in the matter at the time of the report. Further legal action is being taken based on the medical examination and the circumstances recorded by the police.
The incident has again drawn attention to road safety risks faced by pedestrians and two-wheeler users in Kothrud. The area already experiences traffic congestion, while the reported shortage of footpaths leaves people with limited protected space along busy roads. A collision involving a speeding vehicle can therefore affect not only other motorists but also pedestrians and roadside users.
The sequence also highlights the distinction between immediate intervention at an accident site and formal enforcement. In this case, residents stopped the vehicle before handing the driver to the police, while the medical examination and any subsequent complaint or police case will determine the formal legal proceedings.
Police action in the case will depend on the medical findings, statements from those involved and other evidence gathered during the investigation. The Kothrud police are continuing the legal process.
