Pune Airport to Launch New Flights Post-Monsoon

Pune International Airport is set to enhance its connectivity with the addition of 15 new flight slots, approved by the Indian Air Force (IAF) and the Airports Authority of India (AAI). These slots, available between 6:00 AM and 10:30 PM, bring the total number of slots to 235, with 208 currently in use. However, airlines are expected to commence operations using these new slots only after the monsoon season, likely post-Ganesh Chaturthi in September, due to the traditional lean travel period during the monsoon months.

The decision to delay the activation of these slots aligns with industry practices, as airlines typically adjust operations based on seasonal passenger demand. The monsoon season, characterised by reduced travel, often leads to a temporary decrease in flight operations. Airline representatives have indicated that while the slots are available, initiating new services during this period may not be commercially viable. Factors such as infrastructure readiness, route profitability, and passenger demand forecasts play a crucial role in determining the commencement of new flights. In anticipation of increased flight operations, Pune Airport is undergoing significant infrastructure upgrades.

The airport director has confirmed that the IAF is expected to transfer 13 acres of land to the airport by September. This acquisition will facilitate the construction of additional facilities, including five new aircraft parking bays and three remote bays, aimed at alleviating congestion and accommodating the anticipated rise in flight movements. Furthermore, the airport is converting its old arrival area into an additional departure zone, complete with 14 check-in counters and a new airside food court, to enhance passenger amenities and streamline operations. Under international aviation guidelines, airlines are permitted to hold onto unused slots for up to 3-4 months. However, to retain these slots for subsequent seasons, airlines must operate at least 80% of the allocated slots during the current season. This regulation ensures efficient use of airport capacity and encourages airlines to commence operations promptly once conditions are favourable.

Industry experts anticipate a surge in travel post-monsoon, coinciding with the festive season and the commencement of the academic year. This period is expected to witness increased demand for both domestic and international flights. Airlines are likely to capitalise on the new slots to introduce additional services, catering to the growing passenger base and enhancing connectivity from Pune. The strategic activation of the 15 new flight slots at Pune International Airport post-monsoon reflects a balanced approach to infrastructure development and operational efficiency. By aligning slot utilisation with seasonal demand and ensuring necessary infrastructural enhancements, the airport is poised to accommodate future growth and meet the evolving needs of travellers.
