Puducherry rains inundated roads across the Union Territory and its suburbs after a heavy overnight downpour, disrupting traffic and affecting daily wage earners. Authorities responded by closing schools in Puducherry and Karaikal and setting up a control room for emergency assistance.
Minister A Namassivayam announced a holiday on Thursday for all government-run and privately managed schools in the Puducherry and Karaikal regions. The decision covers both government and private institutions as the administration responds to waterlogging and difficult travel conditions.
Puducherry recorded 7 cm of rainfall in the 24 hours ending at 8.30 am on Thursday, according to official sources cited in the report. The rain led to inundation in several areas, with roads affected and traffic disrupted across the city and surrounding suburbs.
The disruption has also affected daily wage earners, whose work and earnings depend on being able to travel through the city. The reported flooding adds pressure on local drainage and emergency-response systems, particularly in low-lying areas where water accumulation can interfere with movement and access to essential services.
A control room has been established to receive emergency calls for help. Official sources said revenue and other departments were fully prepared to deal with any exigencies arising from the rainfall. The administration’s response is focused on handling emergency requests while monitoring affected areas.
The rainfall has also renewed attention on the need to drain water from low-lying parts of Puducherry. On Wednesday, Pro Tem Speaker A Anbalagan submitted a petition to Chief Minister N Rangasamy seeking steps to remove accumulated water from such areas.
With schools closed on Thursday and emergency arrangements in place, the immediate response remains centred on public safety, assistance calls and clearing water from affected locations. The administration’s control room and departmental teams are expected to handle further rain-related emergencies in Puducherry and Karaikal.
