Phalodi Borewell Rescue: Boy Trapped 640 Feet Below Ground

Phalodi borewell rescue teams working near a farm after a child fell into a deep shaft

A nine-year-old boy was trapped inside a borewell at an agricultural farm in Rajasthan’s Phalodi district after falling into the shaft during repair work on Thursday afternoon, prompting an emergency rescue operation by the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), police and district officials.

The child, identified as Bhomaram Bheel, fell into the borewell at around 12.30 pm at a farm in Pooniyon Ki Dhani hamlet under Nosar Gram Panchayat in the Lohawat Panchayat Samiti area. The borewell was nearly 1,050 feet deep, while the boy’s movements were detected at a depth of about 640 feet, according to an administration official overseeing the operation.

The accident occurred while a boring machine was operating at the site. The borewell had stopped functioning, and Bhomaram’s family had arranged machinery to repair it. The boy was near his father, Pacharam, who was engaged in removing the motor, when he suddenly slipped into the narrow shaft. His father was unable to reach him before he fell further down.

Rescuers lowered a camera into the borewell to locate the child and assess his condition. Officials said movement was detected at approximately 640 feet. Teams were also attempting to supply oxygen into the shaft to reduce the risk of suffocation while the rescue operation continued.

“The borewell is nearly 1,050 feet deep. Pacharam, father of the boy, was present at the spot to fix the machine issue, when the accident occurred. The man could not reach his son before he slipped further down the narrow shaft,” the administration official said, according to the report.

Administrative officials, police personnel and an SDRF team reached the farm after the incident and remained engaged in the rescue operation late Thursday evening. The depth of the borewell and the narrowness of the shaft created significant operational difficulties for the teams attempting to reach the child.

The incident also drew villagers to the farm as news of the rescue operation spread through the area. Bhomaram is the only son of his parents, the report said, leaving the family distressed as officials worked to establish his condition and plan the next stage of the operation.

The rescue teams’ immediate focus remained on maintaining oxygen supply, monitoring the child through the lowered camera and determining a safe method to bring him out of the borewell. No further outcome of the operation had been reported by late Thursday evening.
