Perumbavoor’s traffic congestion is set to undergo an expert assessment covering the need for a flyover, bypasses and junction upgrades, Kerala minister P.K. Basheer said while inaugurating a ₹2.60-crore road renovation project in the constituency. The expert team is expected to visit Perumbavoor this month and submit a report on possible solutions.
The study will examine infrastructure requirements to reduce congestion in the town, according to the minister. Basheer said the government would provide full support through the Public Works Department for Perumbavoor’s development and for addressing its traffic problems.
The minister said flyovers and bypasses could become a reality if traders, elected representatives and local residents collectively agreed to provide the land required for the projects. His remarks place land availability at the centre of the proposed transport improvements, although no specific alignment, project cost or construction timeline was announced.
The immediate road project inaugurated at the event covers the stretch from Odakkali to Methala Canal Bridge on the Paniyeli–Muvattupuzha Road in the Perumbavoor Assembly constituency. The section has been renovated by laying tiles at a reported cost of ₹2.60 crore.
Basheer also said that roads across Kerala would be upgraded in phases to BM and BC standards within three years. He added that construction works would not be taken up without first ensuring the availability of land, to avoid projects being abandoned midway.
Under the approach outlined by the minister, at least 80% of the land in a project area would have to be handed over to the Public Works Department before construction work is undertaken. He cited 28 completed bridges in the state that remain unusable because land for their approach roads is unavailable.
The minister said the government wanted to change that situation. If local self-government institutions and residents came forward to provide land without compensation for approach roads, the government would take up new bridges and other development projects, he said.
Manoj Moothedan MLA presided over the event. Benny Behanan MP, panchayat president N.M. Salim, former MLA Eldhose Kunnappilly and Mubas Odakkali also attended. The next stated milestone for Perumbavoor’s congestion plan is the expert team’s proposed visit and subsequent report, but the source report does not specify a date for either.
