Perenco Builds New Oil Platform in Congo

Perenco Congo SA, a subsidiary of Perenco Holdings, has announced a major infrastructure investment aimed at strengthening Congo’s offshore energy production. The company is building a new offshore platform, named Kombi 2, which will soon be deployed in the Kombi-Likalala-Libondo II (KLL II) permit area. The move is part of a broader $900 million investment roadmap to scale up energy output sustainably.

Currently under construction at the Nieuwdorp shipyard in the Netherlands by Dixstone—Perenco’s sister company—the Kombi 2 platform represents a $200 million investment. Once complete, the platform is expected to extract 7 million cubic feet of gas per day. It is scheduled to be shipped to Congo in October 2025 and become fully operational off the coast of Pointe-Noire by early 2026.

The project is designed to meet high standards of safety, performance, and environmental responsibility. According to company leadership, the platform will not only increase gas recovery but also help generate on-site electricity using two gas turbines connected to a 33 kV electrical hub. This system supports self-sufficiency and reduces environmental impact by minimising reliance on external energy sources.

In addition to its energy production capabilities, the Kombi 2 platform will improve surface treatment and maximise output from existing wells. Perenco aims to unlock an additional 10 million barrels of reserves by optimising current assets. The platform also features a well-bay module, which could accommodate new drilling operations and potentially access another 10 million barrels of oil.

Perenco’s Kombi 2 project follows a 20-year renewal of key permits, reinforcing its long-term role in Congo’s energy sector. Aligned with the nation’s 2030 production targets, the initiative supports energy security, job creation, and sustainability. With a $900 million plan, including new drilling and infrastructure upgrades, Perenco aims to boost oil output while embracing cleaner energy practices through gas recovery and on-site electricity generation.

The Kombi 2 platform is not just an engineering feat—it represents a commitment to inclusive, long-term growth in one of Africa’s key oil-producing nations. As Perenco deepens its operations in Congo, the blend of investment, innovation, and infrastructure is set to fuel not just energy production, but broader development outcomes.
