PCMC Unveils ₹113 Crore Road Upgrade Plan for 2027 Tour

PCMC road upgrade works planned along a Pimpri-Chinchwad cycling route

The Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) plans to spend ₹113 crore on upgrading and beautifying 113 km of roads ahead of the Pune Grand Tour 2027, with works covering resurfacing, junction improvements, cycle tracks, road markings, signage and street lighting.

The second edition of the international cycling event is scheduled to be held from January 26 to 31, 2027. PCMC said the planned works will cover key routes, junctions and public spaces across the city, including areas connecting industrial, information technology and residential districts.

The fourth phase of the beautification project will include routes and locations such as Alandi–Lonavala, Gandhi Peth, Prabhat Colony, the Chapekar Chowk underpass, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Chowk, Dr DY Patil International University, Nigdi, Bhosale Chowk, the MIDC area, Hinjawadi IT Park, Wakad, Dange Chowk and Baner.

According to Bapusaheb Gaikwad, joint city engineer at PCMC, preparations for the project are being undertaken in a planned manner. He said the spending would not be limited to hosting a single sporting event and that the infrastructure improvements would provide longer-term benefits for residents.

The planned road works include resurfacing and concreting along the cycling route to provide a safe and high-quality surface for competitors. PCMC also plans to repair and repaint barricades along Bus Rapid Transit corridors, develop modern cycle tracks, repair speed breakers and improve zebra crossings for cyclists, motorists and pedestrians.

High-tech directional signs and traffic information boards are proposed at key locations. The civic body also plans to improve street lighting so that the routes and surrounding areas are better illuminated at night. The works will be carried out in line with standards of the Union Cycliste Internationale, the international governing body for cycling, according to the report.

The project places a major sporting event at the centre of a wider streetscape upgrade across Pimpri-Chinchwad. The proposed routes pass through areas with different urban functions, including the MIDC industrial belt, Hinjawadi’s technology district and residential corridors around Wakad, Nigdi and Baner. The works will therefore affect daily travel and road use beyond the event period.

The first edition of the Pune Grand Tour featured 171 cyclists from 35 countries. The 2027 edition is expected to be larger and will be broadcast live to audiences across the world, putting the city’s roads, junctions and infrastructure before an international audience.

The event is also expected to support local sporting activity and generate business for hotels, transport operators and other local enterprises. PCMC’s planned interventions are intended to prepare the city for the January 2027 event while improving road surfaces, traffic information, pedestrian safety features and public-space conditions along the identified routes.
