Pavlov Hospital Adds 200 Beds as Kolkata Mental-Health Demand Rises

Pavlov Hospital in Kolkata, where 200 new mental-health beds have been approved.

Kolkata’s Pavlov Mental Hospital will add 200 beds and create 79 new posts after receiving administrative approval from the state Health Department, expanding the government facility’s capacity from 250 to 450 beds. The decision comes amid rising patient numbers and the need to strengthen treatment services at one of the city’s key public mental-health institutions.

The approved expansion includes positions for medical officers, nurses, pharmacists, storekeepers, clerical staff and ambulance drivers. According to the report, the new posts are intended to improve hospital services and provide patients with better treatment facilities as the institution prepares to accommodate more admissions.

The 79 sanctioned posts comprise three specialist medical officers, 65 staff nurses, five pharmacists, two storekeepers, two lower division clerks and two ambulance drivers. The composition places nursing staff at the centre of the expansion, accounting for the largest share of the new workforce. The additional medical, pharmacy, stores, administrative and transport personnel are expected to support the hospital’s expanded operations.

Pavlov Mental Hospital is an important centre within Kolkata’s government mental-health system. The increase in bed capacity is intended to reduce pressure created by limited inpatient availability and allow more patients to receive institutional treatment. The expansion also links physical capacity with staffing: the additional beds will require clinical, pharmaceutical, administrative and ambulance services to operate effectively.

The Health Department has directed that all appointments be made in accordance with the prescribed recruitment rules. Hospital management sources said the two ambulance-driver positions would be filled on a contractual basis. The report also said that adherence to recruitment procedures would be emphasised to prevent irregularities during the appointment process.

The approval therefore covers both the scale of the hospital and the administrative process needed to implement it. The 200-bed increase will take the facility’s sanctioned capacity to 450 beds, while the 79 new positions provide the staffing framework for the expanded service. However, the report does not specify the construction or conversion work required to make the additional beds operational, the implementation schedule, or the recruitment timetable.

For Kolkata’s public healthcare network, the announcement represents a capacity expansion at a time when Pavlov Hospital is facing growing patient demand. Its impact will depend on how quickly the approved positions are filled and how the additional beds are commissioned. The next steps are the recruitment process under the applicable rules and the hospital’s arrangements for bringing the expanded capacity into service.
