Indian Railways has inaugurated three pivotal projects aimed at enhancing both freight and passenger services in the state.
These developments are set to alleviate congestion, improve coal transportation, and provide better facilities for commuters. The most notable of these initiatives is the inauguration of the third rail line connecting Son Nagar in Bihar to Mohammad Ganj in Jharkhand. This 65-kilometre stretch, constructed at an estimated cost of ₹1,338 crore, is expected to facilitate the efficient movement of coal from Jharkhand’s Palamu district to Bihar’s Aurangabad district. The new line will ease the load on the Grand Cord line, a crucial route for both passenger and freight trains, thereby ensuring a more reliable supply chain to power plants such as Ankorha and Nabi Nagar.
Another significant upgrade is the installation of an automatic signaling system between Sasaram and Anugrah Narayan Road, spanning 25 kilometres. This ₹43 crore project will allow trains to operate at speeds of up to 160 km/h on the New Delhi–Howrah corridor, enhancing both safety and efficiency. The automation of signaling is expected to reduce delays and improve coordination between passenger and freight services. To address the growing passenger traffic and decongest Patna Junction, Indian Railways has commenced the construction of a new terminal at Hardinge Park. The ₹95 crore project involves the development of five terminal platforms, covering a total length of 2.273 kilometres. Once operational, the terminal will handle approximately 85 pairs of local trains, including MEMU and passenger services, thereby alleviating pressure on Patna Junction and improving the overall travel experience for commuters. The enhanced rail infrastructure is poised to have a significant impact on coal transportation in the region.
The improved connectivity between Son Nagar and Mohammad Ganj will ensure a more efficient supply of coal to power plants in Bihar, supporting the state’s energy needs and industrial growth. Additionally, the upgrades to signaling systems and terminal facilities will streamline operations, reduce transit times, and bolster regional connectivity. These developments are part of a broader effort to modernize Bihar’s railway infrastructure and cater to the increasing demand for both passenger and freight services. With the state’s strategic location and growing industrial base, these initiatives are expected to play a crucial role in fostering economic growth and improving the quality of life for its residents.
