Osmania Junior Doctors Protest Threatens Elective Hospital Services

The Osmania Medical College Junior Doctors Association has announced a protest at Osmania General Hospital in Hyderabad on October 12 over long-pending concerns related to postgraduate training, clinical learning, working conditions and hospital infrastructure.

According to an official strike notice issued by the association on October 10, the protest will begin at 8.30 a.m. at the main gate of OGH. The association has called on interns, undergraduate students, postgraduate residents, senior residents and representatives from all departments to participate.

The proposed action could affect elective services at the hospital. OMC JUDA has urged departments to suspend elective outpatient department services and elective operation theatre procedures during the protest. It has also said that emergency services and essential patient care must continue without interruption.

The association said repeated representations to the authorities had not resolved several issues affecting hospital departments and the quality of postgraduate training. Its demands cover the learning environment for residents, the strength of clinical training, working conditions and the infrastructure needed for safe and effective patient care.

The dispute places the functioning of a major public hospital around two competing requirements: allowing medical trainees to raise concerns about their working and learning conditions while ensuring that patients continue to receive essential treatment. The association’s decision to distinguish elective services from emergency and essential care reflects that operational divide, although the practical effect of the protest will depend on how departments implement the call.

OMC JUDA said the protest was not directed at any individual or department. It described the action as an effort to protect the dignity of residents, ensure a proper learning environment, strengthen clinical training and secure the infrastructure required for patient care.

The notice calls for participation across multiple categories of medical personnel, including interns, undergraduate students and residents at different levels. That broad mobilisation could bring concerns about training and hospital operations into a common forum, but the supplied notice does not specify the individual infrastructure deficiencies, staffing gaps or administrative responses behind each demand.

The protest is scheduled to begin at the main gate of Osmania General Hospital at 8.30 a.m. on October 12. Emergency services and essential patient care are expected to remain uninterrupted according to the association’s notice, while elective OPD and OT services have been asked to remain suspended during the protest.
