Only 61 of an estimated 600 Hyderabad private sewage treatment plants have registered with the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board, which has set October 25 as the deadline for all remaining facilities to complete mandatory registration.

The registration requirement applies to sewage treatment plants operating in apartments, gated communities, commercial complexes, hotels, hospitals, educational institutions, industries and other private establishments, according to a statement issued by the water board and reported by Deccan Chronicle.

The board is seeking information on each plant’s treatment capacity, the volume of sewage treated daily, how the treated wastewater is being used and whether surplus treated water is available. An online registration facility has been provided through the board’s website.

The initiative is linked to the proposed use of treated grey water for non-drinking purposes. Officials said the programme is intended to promote the reuse of treated wastewater in construction, industrial activity, gardening and other applications that do not require potable water.

The move also comes ahead of the summer period, when demand for drinking water is expected to place greater pressure on Hyderabad’s water resources. By collecting plant-level information, the board is seeking to establish how much wastewater is being treated across private premises and how much of that output can potentially be reused.

Private sewage treatment plants are present across a range of large residential and institutional developments. However, the registration figures indicate that most of the estimated facilities covered by the requirement have not yet submitted their details. The board has not stated in the supplied report what enforcement action will follow if operators miss the October 25 deadline.

The registration process is expected to give the water board information on the operating scale of private treatment infrastructure, including daily treatment volumes and surplus availability. These details are relevant to planning the reuse of treated water in activities currently dependent on freshwater supplies.

Operators must submit details of their establishments, contact information, treatment capacity, daily wastewater treatment and the availability of surplus treated water through the online facility. The October 25 deadline remains the next official milestone for private sewage treatment plants covered by the mandatory registration requirement.
