An oil tanker overturned on Jessore Road near the airport on October 15, injuring multiple motorcycle and scooter riders after diesel spilled across the road and disrupting traffic in several lanes, according to a report by Bartaman Patrika.
The accident took place near Bankra in the airport-adjacent stretch of Jessore Road as the tanker was travelling from the airport towards Madhyamgram. The report said a tyre burst while the vehicle was entering the Bankra area. The driver reportedly lost control despite attempting to steady the tanker, which overturned in the middle of the road with a loud impact.
Diesel spread across the carriageway following the crash. Several two-wheeler riders reportedly lost control after their vehicles skidded on the fuel and sustained injuries. The incident also led to long traffic queues during the morning, affecting people travelling for work and those heading out during the festive period.
Police from the Airport police station reached the site after the accident. The report said the tanker driver’s whereabouts were not immediately known. Police began investigating the circumstances of the crash, including the reported tyre burst and the vehicle’s speed before it overturned.
A crane was brought in to remove the tanker, while crews began clearing the diesel from the road. The cleanup was necessary both to restore traffic movement and to reduce the risk of further skidding and crashes on the affected stretch. Traffic disruption was gradually brought under control as the vehicle was removed and the road-clearing operation progressed.
The incident highlights the safety risks created when fuel-carrying vehicles overturn on busy urban roads. A diesel spill can turn a traffic disruption into a secondary-accident zone, particularly for motorcycles and scooters that have less stability on slippery surfaces. Further details on the injured riders, the tanker operator and any formal police findings were not available in the supplied report.
