Noida Airport Orders Drainage Push to Cut Bird Strike Risks

Noida International Airport area being managed for bird strike risks and waterlogging

Noida International Airport has directed a coordinated response to reduce risks from birds and animals around the airport, with officials ordering faster drainage work and measures to prevent waterlogging in the surrounding area. The directions were issued during a virtual meeting of the Airfield Environment Management Committee chaired by the Gautam Buddh Nagar district magistrate on Thursday.

The meeting reviewed the movement of birds and other animals in and around the airport and examined the possibility of aircraft collisions with them. Officials also discussed measures to maintain a safe and suitable environment across the airport area, according to the report by Navbharat Times – Noida.

The committee instructed the concerned departments to complete required action within a defined timeframe and maintain coordination while implementing the measures. The directions place drainage, sanitation and animal management within the airport’s wider operational safety framework rather than treating them as separate civic issues.

The Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority and the irrigation department were specifically asked to accelerate pending drainage works. They were also directed to take effective steps to prevent waterlogging. The stated objective is to reduce the likelihood of birds and other animals gathering near the airport, where standing water and related conditions can contribute to animal activity.

The meeting was conducted by the chief operating officer of Noida International Airport. Airport officials gave a detailed presentation on factors influencing the movement of birds and other animals in the area and briefed the committee on the risks and possible preventive measures. The committee subsequently directed the relevant departments to ensure the necessary action on these issues.

The review also covered sanitation arrangements, drainage and animal management around the airport. Officials were asked to strengthen these systems, indicating that airport safety will depend not only on operational controls within the airfield but also on conditions in the surrounding urban and semi-urban landscape.

Representatives from the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority, the district irrigation department, the veterinary department, district administration, police and the local nagar panchayat attended the meeting. Their participation reflects the number of agencies involved in managing risks around a large airport, where land use, drainage, waste management, animal control and aviation operations overlap.

The committee’s immediate next steps are the acceleration of pending drainage works, prevention of waterlogging and stronger coordination among the departments responsible for sanitation and animal management. The report did not specify a completion deadline for the drainage works or provide details of any additional bird-control systems discussed during the meeting.
