New Town to Get India’s Tallest Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Statue

Planned New Town statue of Shyama Prasad Mukherjee at Kolkata’s Eco Park

New Town’s Eco Park is set to receive a 125-foot bronze statue of Shyama Prasad Mukherjee, with the West Bengal Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation preparing to appoint an experienced sculptor or specialist agency for the project.

The proposed statue will be built using approximately 140 metric tonnes of bronze. Its structure will use bronze panels between 8 and 10 millimetres thick, with traditional lost-wax casting combined with modern construction techniques, according to the report by Sanmarg.

WBHIDCO, which has been designated the nodal agency, is preparing to begin the selection process for the sculptor or agency. Once the work order is issued, the selected party is expected to complete construction within about seven months.

The project was announced as part of preparations to mark Mukherjee’s 125th birth anniversary. Union Home Minister Amit Shah laid the foundation stone for the proposed memorial at Eco Park in July 2026. The Union Ministry of Culture said the event included a ground-breaking ceremony and the unveiling of a foundation-stone plaque for the 125-foot bronze statue.

The development is planned as more than a standalone statue. Government plans envisage the site as a city landmark and heritage-tourism centre, supported by visitor infrastructure, essential public amenities and landscaped green areas. The stated objective is to attract visitors from across India and overseas while integrating the memorial into New Town’s broader public-space and tourism landscape.

The scale of the proposal will make it a prominent addition to the planned city’s civic and cultural geography. New Town has increasingly been developed around large public destinations, open spaces and purpose-built visitor facilities. The proposed memorial will add a politically and historically significant landmark to that urban environment, although the supplied report does not provide a detailed project cost, construction tender value, maintenance plan or expected visitor capacity.

The proposed statue would be nearly twice the height of the tallest existing statue of Mukherjee cited in the report. That statue, located in Lucknow, is 65 feet high. At 125 feet, the New Town structure would therefore become the tallest statue of the former founder of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh in the country once completed.

The immediate administrative milestone is the appointment of the sculptor or specialist statue-construction agency. Construction is expected to begin after the work order is issued, with completion targeted within approximately seven months.
