NEEPCO Profit Hits Record Rs 769 Crore as Northeast Power Capacity Expands

NEEPCO profit reached a record Rs 769.08 crore in 2025-26, while the public-sector power utility continued to account for nearly one-third of the Northeast’s installed electricity capacity, according to a statement reported by the company on Friday.

The North Eastern Electric Power Corporation Limited said its profit after tax was the highest in its history. The utility operates 2,051 MW of installed capacity across the Northeast, including 1,519 MW of hydropower, 527 MW of gas-based power and 5 MW of solar power.

NEEPCO said the capacity represents about 32.6% of the region’s total installed capacity of 6,298 MW, citing data from the National Power Portal. The figures place the company at the centre of the Northeast’s electricity-generation system, where its operating portfolio includes hydroelectric and gas-based stations as well as a small solar component.

Its major projects include the 600 MW Kameng Hydroelectric Power Station in Arunachal Pradesh, which was commissioned in 2020-21. The project is part of NEEPCO’s hydropower portfolio, which accounts for the largest share of the company’s installed capacity in the region.

The utility is also pursuing a 300 MW ground-mounted solar project in Bikaner, Rajasthan. NEEPCO said the project and its other renewable-energy initiatives are expected to increase generation capacity and support India’s clean-energy transition. The company did not provide a commissioning timeline for the Bikaner project in the statement.

The capacity mix highlights the different roles played by NEEPCO’s assets. Hydropower forms the bulk of its installed capacity, while gas-based generation contributes more than 500 MW and solar remains a smaller part of the current portfolio. The planned Rajasthan project would significantly expand the company’s solar capacity beyond its existing 5 MW in the Northeast, subject to implementation.

Alongside its power operations, NEEPCO said its community initiatives cover education, healthcare, sanitation, skill development, community infrastructure and support for economically disadvantaged groups. These activities are presented as part of the company’s wider social and community programme.

In Shillong, the company recently adopted the MUDA Shopping Complex at Khyndailad, Police Bazar, as a cleanliness target unit under the Swachhata Hi Seva campaign. The initiative involves removing paan and lime stains, cleaning walls and other surfaces, and addressing littering at the shopping complex.

The profit announcement comes with NEEPCO continuing to operate a large share of the Northeast’s installed power capacity while extending its renewable-energy plans outside the region. The company’s next stated milestones are the progress of the 300 MW Bikaner solar project and the continuation of its community and cleanliness initiatives.
