Navi Mumbai Water Supply Shutdown to Hit 9 Areas for 16 Hours

Navi Mumbai will face a 16-hour water supply shutdown from Tuesday, October 6, to Wednesday, October 7, as the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation carries out maintenance and metering works at and around the Bhokarpada Water Treatment Plant and the Morbe Main Feeder Water Pipeline.

According to an official NMMC public notification cited by Mid-Day, water supply through the Main Feeder Water Pipeline will remain shut from 10 am on October 6 until 2 am on October 7. The shutdown will affect Belapur, Nerul, Vashi, Turbhe-Sanpada, Koparkhairane, Ghansoli and Airoli in the NMMC area.

Water supply will also be affected in the Kharghar and Kamothe nodes under the City and Industrial Development Corporation area. The civic body has advised residents in all affected locations to use water carefully and make the necessary arrangements before the shutdown begins.

The scheduled work includes the installation of an MS plate to disconnect the channel of the 135 million-litre-capacity sump at the Bhokarpada Water Treatment Plant. NMMC will also install new metering kiosks at the plant as part of the planned works.

Another major component is the installation of a flow meter on the 2,050 mm-diameter Morbe Main Feeder Water Pipeline near the Bhokarpada plant. The pipeline is a key part of the system supplying water to several residential and urban nodes across Navi Mumbai and adjoining CIDCO areas.

The work will additionally involve installing an 1,800 mm-diameter butterfly valve on the Morbe Main Feeder Water Pipeline at CBD Sector 7. Butterfly valves measuring 700 mm and 900 mm will be installed on distribution pipelines connected to the Morbe feeder near Arenja Circle in Vashi and near Mahape, respectively.

NMMC said the shutdown is expected to end at 2 am on October 7. However, residents should expect low pressure during both the morning and evening water supply cycles on Wednesday, even after the main shutdown period concludes.

The planned disruption illustrates how maintenance on a limited number of high-capacity feeder pipelines can affect multiple nodes across a connected urban water network. The works announced by NMMC combine treatment-plant modifications, flow measurement and valve installation at different points of the transmission and distribution system.

The civic body has appealed to residents in the affected NMMC and CIDCO areas to cooperate while the infrastructure works are carried out. It has also asked households to conserve water during the shutdown and make arrangements ahead of the interruption.
