A fire at a Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) office near the Nashik Road flyover destroyed official records, computers, furniture and other equipment on Saturday morning, while firefighting operations temporarily disrupted traffic on the busy Pune Road. No injuries were reported.
The blaze broke out in the ground-floor section of the three-storey office building near the Datta Mandir signal. The fire spread through the store room, record room and meeting hall, damaging administrative documents and office infrastructure before firefighters brought it under control.
Fire officials received an emergency call at around 9.15am and sent a fire tender to the location. As the flames intensified, two additional fire engines, including one from the K K Wagh College Centre, were deployed. Firefighters worked for nearly two hours to contain the blaze.
The fire destroyed or damaged computers, air-conditioning units, furniture and other electronic equipment. The records stored in the affected sections were also reduced to ashes. Authorities are assessing the extent of the loss and the impact on the office’s operations.
The incident had an immediate effect beyond the utility premises. Fire engines and emergency personnel operating near the Datta Mandir signal caused vehicles to pile up on Pune Road during the morning peak period. The traffic disruption continued while the firefighting operation was under way.
Preliminary findings indicate that an electrical short circuit may have triggered the fire, but officials have not established the exact cause. A detailed inquiry has been launched to determine how the blaze started and assess the damage to the building, records and equipment.
The office was largely unoccupied when the fire broke out, which helped prevent casualties. Authorities are expected to complete the damage assessment and inquiry into the suspected electrical fault before determining the next steps for the affected MSEDCL premises and records.
