Narendrapur Warehouse Fire Rekindles Safety Fears After 11 Deaths

Fire engines responding to the Narendrapur warehouse fire in South 24 Parganas

A fire broke out at the same momo and event-management warehouse in Narendrapur, South 24 Parganas, on Friday night, eight months after a blaze at the premises killed 11 workers. Four fire engines and police reached the site, while officials reported that no casualties had been recorded in the latest incident so far.

The cause of the Narendrapur warehouse fire was not immediately known. Fire service officials have begun an investigation to determine how the blaze started, according to a report by Anandabazar – West Bengal. The fire was reported to be under control after emergency teams reached the location.

Debashis Dhar, the Trinamool Congress legislator from the Sonarpur North Assembly constituency, also visited the site. He said the warehouse was abandoned and contained materials believed to be oil-based. Dhar alleged that the fire may have been deliberately started and claimed that the incident could have a political connection. These allegations had not been independently established in the report.

The latest fire has revived questions about whether safety measures were strengthened at the premises after the earlier incident. A fire at the same warehouse on January 26 killed 11 workers, according to the report. The building had reportedly been used for storing momo-related materials and event-management equipment.

The recurrence has also raised concerns over the continued use or condition of a warehouse linked to a fatal fire. The available report does not establish whether the premises had received new fire-safety equipment, whether it had been inspected after the January incident, or whether any formal restrictions had been imposed on its use.

The presence of four fire engines indicates the scale of the emergency response, although the report does not provide details of the fire’s size, the duration of firefighting operations or the extent of damage to the building and stored materials. Police were also present at the site as fire officials began examining the circumstances.

For residents and workers in the surrounding area, the incident is significant because it occurred at a location already associated with a fatal workplace fire. The immediate priority remains confirming that no one was trapped or injured and determining whether combustible material was stored at the premises in violation of safety requirements.

Fire service officials are expected to establish the cause of the blaze as part of their investigation. Further action will depend on the findings regarding the warehouse’s use, stored materials, fire-prevention arrangements and compliance with safety requirements.
