Nandigram Infrastructure Projects Get Two-Year Implementation Plan

Nandigram infrastructure projects including a rural bridge and road in West Bengal

Nandigram has been promised a phased infrastructure upgrade over the next two years, with local representatives and residents asked to submit a comprehensive list of development needs within a month. The proposals are expected to cover healthcare, bridges, irrigation, drinking water, housing and employment.

Suvendu Adhikari made the announcement while addressing a Durga Puja gathering at the Shivalaya temple premises in Reyapara. He said the administration would work with local bodies, educational institutions, healthcare establishments and social organisations to identify and implement projects in phases.

The proposed works include upgrading the local hospital, replacing wooden bridges with permanent structures and renovating an irrigation canal. Adhikari said he had already directed the authorities to improve the local hospital, alleging that the existing block primary health centre did not have adequate facilities.

He also referred to the death of a young child allegedly caused by medical neglect before the recent election and said he had visited the bereaved family without considering its political affiliation. The remarks highlighted healthcare access as one of the immediate concerns that local infrastructure proposals are expected to address.

Adhikari said the condition of several wooden bridges in the area required attention and that an irrigation canal needed renovation. According to him, the canal was last repaired by the Haldia Development Authority around 10 to 12 years ago. The proposed replacement of wooden bridges with permanent structures would be subject to the proposals submitted by local representatives and residents, followed by phased implementation over the stated two-year period.

Employment was another focus of the address. Adhikari claimed that 11,000 constables had been appointed on merit and announced a target of one lakh government recruitments within a year. He said the appointments would not involve backdoor arrangements or the exchange of bribes, while criticising alleged recruitment irregularities under the previous government.

The proposed welfare measures include assistance under the Annapurna scheme for economically weaker families, an increase of Rs 500 in old-age and disability pensions, and housing under the Awas Yojana. Bringing piped drinking water to households was also identified as a government priority.

The announcement places the responsibility for identifying local infrastructure gaps on representatives and residents, who have been asked to submit their proposals within one month. The government’s stated next step is to examine the submissions and implement selected works in phases during the following two years.
