Nagpur Traffic Signals Demand Grows as Festive Congestion Spreads

Nagpur traffic police inspect a congested market intersection near city flyovers

Nagpur traffic police inspected several congested market areas after the Nag Vidarbha Chamber of Commerce (NVCC) sought urgent measures to manage festive-season traffic, including signals at three flyovers, action against wrong-side driving and tighter checks on school vans and unauthorised e-rickshaws.

DCP (Traffic) Aditya Mirkhelkar and traffic police inspector Ajay Mankar visited the affected locations on Friday to assess the problems reported by motorists and traders. NVCC president Swapnil Ahirkar and other office-bearers accompanied the officials during the inspection.

The inspection covered Gangabai Ghat Square, Gopaldas Square, Bharat Mata Square, Maskasath Square, Kirana Oli, Shaheed Square, Sarafa Bazaar, Tanga Stand, Nanga Putla and Teen Nal Square. These areas include several busy market stretches where traffic volumes rise sharply during festivals.

The traders’ body has demanded traffic signals at three flyovers: the Indora-Dighori flyover, particularly near Ashok Square; the Pardi flyover at Old Pardi Square; and the Shanti Nagar flyover. NVCC executive committee member Rakesh Gandhi said signals were needed at these locations to manage movements between connecting roads and improve safety for motorists.

The chamber specifically pointed to the Pardi flyover, where four roads meet at Old Pardi Square. It also proposed synchronising traffic signals across the city so vehicles can move through successive intersections with fewer repeated stops. The request places the focus not only on individual junctions but also on how traffic flows across connected corridors.

NVCC vice-president Ramavtar Totla raised concerns over wrong-side driving. While acknowledging police action against the violation, he sought operational traffic signals along the relevant stretches from 7am to 10pm. He also requested that at least two traffic personnel be deployed at major intersections.

School-zone safety formed another part of the representation. NVCC secretary CA Hemant Sarada called for traffic signals or speed breakers near schools on the stretch between Vaishno Devi Square and Gangabai Ghat. The chamber also asked authorities to act against unauthorised e-rickshaws and conduct regular inspections of school vans that it alleged were operating with illegal gas kits.

The demands extend beyond the immediate festive rush. The traders’ body said Itwari and Mahal face severe congestion during festivals and sought traffic personnel between 4pm and 9pm at Gandhibagh Square, Shaheed Square, Neelam Square, Teen Tanga Stand Square, Daga Hospital Square and other busy intersections.

The traffic police inspection follows the NVCC’s recent representation and provides an official on-ground assessment of the locations identified by traders. The report does not specify whether new signals, speed breakers or additional deployments have been approved. Further action will depend on the traffic authorities’ assessment and response to the demands.
