Nagpur Textile Park Plan Brings Jobs, But Footfall Is Uncertain

Nagpur has proposed a Rs1,226 crore textile park on Subhash Road, a multi-storey commercial complex planned to bring textile trading, manufacturing, warehousing and allied activities into one centralised destination opposite Geeta Mandir. The project is expected to create 8,000 to 10,000 direct jobs, according to a report by Times of India – Nagpur.

The proposed complex will occupy a 15,503.60 square-metre plot and have a carpet area of around 7.898 lakh square feet. Its 672 units are planned to include shops, manufacturing units, warehouses and offices, creating space for different parts of the textile supply chain within a single development.

The project is also planned with 34 lifts, four escalators and six staircases to support movement through the multi-storey structure. A food court and an event space with a capacity of around 6,000 to 7,000 people are among the other proposed facilities.

Its location on Subhash Road is being positioned as a key advantage. The complex is expected to be accessible to textile traders, small entrepreneurs and manufacturers from Nagpur, Vidarbha and the wider Central India region. The proposal comes against Nagpur’s established association with textile trade and is intended to consolidate commercial and manufacturing activity that is currently spread across different locations.

The project is also expected to generate an estimated profit of around Rs175 crore for the Nagpur Housing and Area Development Board, according to the report. The proposed employment figure would make the complex a significant addition to the city’s commercial and industrial infrastructure if the project is implemented as planned.

However, the proposal has received a mixed response from textile traders and retailers. Some have welcomed the central location and the concentration of textile-related businesses. Others have questioned whether the proposed units will be appropriately sized for traders and whether customers will be willing to travel to upper floors for cloth purchases.

Traders have pointed to the closure of several malls in Nagpur as a warning about the difficulties faced by large, multi-storey shopping destinations. Their concern is that a central location alone may not guarantee sustained footfall if shoppers continue to prefer easily accessible, ground-level commercial establishments.

The response to the textile park will therefore depend on more than the number of units or the scale of the planned facilities. Traders cited in the report said customer footfall and the ability to attract both businesses and shoppers would determine whether the complex becomes a functioning commercial centre after it becomes operational. The report did not provide a construction or completion timeline for the project.
