Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) has reopened the pedestrian subway on Sayyajirao Road after a safety review, restoring a dedicated crossing facility on one of the city’s busiest roads and adding CCTV cameras, artwork and waste bins to improve security and upkeep.
The facility was inspected by MCC commissioner MK Savita before it was opened to the public. The subway had been built nearly a decade ago but remained closed for extended periods because of safety concerns. It was opened temporarily during Dasara in 2025.
Sayyajirao Road carries heavy vehicular traffic, particularly during Mysuru Dasara and other major public events. The volume of vehicles can make surface-level crossings difficult for pedestrians, increasing risks for residents, shoppers and visitors travelling towards or around the Devaraja Market area.
According to the report, MCC expects the reopened subway to improve pedestrian movement, reduce the risk of accidents and support smoother traffic flow on the road. The civic body has appealed to pedestrians to use the facility instead of crossing the road directly.
The subway has also received an aesthetic makeover, with artwork installed on its interior walls. CCTV cameras have been added as a security measure, while waste bins have been provided to help maintain cleanliness inside the facility. MCC has asked users to protect the artwork and other amenities and to keep the subway clean.
The reopening places renewed responsibility on both the civic administration and users. The facility’s effectiveness will depend on whether it remains clean, secure and accessible during regular traffic as well as peak periods such as Dasara, when pedestrian and vehicle movement around central Mysuru increases.
MCC’s immediate next step is to keep the subway operational and encourage citizens to use it for road crossings. The civic body has not provided further details in the supplied report on additional staffing, operating hours or a long-term maintenance schedule.
