The Mysuru bus accident killed four people and injured 14 others after a private sleeper bus travelling from Bengaluru to Kozhikode collided with a goods lorry near Periyapatna in Karnataka’s Mysuru district early Friday, according to Periyapatna police.
The collision took place at around 3.45 am on a road near Periyapatna. The Kaveri sleeper bus was travelling from Karnataka towards Kerala when it collided with the lorry, which was coming from the opposite direction. The impact severely damaged the front portions of both vehicles.
The deceased have been identified as bus driver Sunil, bus cleaner Sagesh and Aftab, a resident of Kozhikode. Police are yet to establish the identity of the fourth victim. The bodies were shifted to Periyapatna Government Hospital for post-mortem examinations.
Preliminary information from the police indicates that a tree had fallen on the road amid rain. The lorry driver reportedly swerved to the right to avoid the fallen tree and moved into the path of the oncoming bus. Police also said the bus was allegedly travelling at high speed. These circumstances remain part of the investigation.
Fourteen injured passengers were shifted to hospitals in Hunsur and Mysuru for treatment. Some of the injured sustained serious injuries, police said. Their condition was still being assessed, and authorities had not reported any further fatalities at the time of the report.
The crash highlights the risks faced by passengers on overnight inter-state bus services, where journeys often pass through rural road stretches during low-visibility hours and adverse weather. In this case, the reported obstruction caused by the fallen tree and the subsequent movement of the lorry into the bus’s path are central to the preliminary account of the collision.
The accident also required coordination between the police, hospitals and local emergency responders. The injured were taken to medical facilities in Hunsur and Mysuru, while the deceased were moved to the government hospital in Periyapatna for legal and post-mortem procedures.
A case has been registered at Periyapatna police station. Further investigation is underway to establish the precise sequence of events, assess the condition of the road and vehicles, and determine the circumstances that led to the collision.
