Mumbai’s Powai Lake Overflows After Intense Monsoon Rains

Mumbai’s Powai Lake, an artificial reservoir managed by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), began overflowing early this morning due to continuous heavy rainfall in its catchment area over the past two days. The lake, which has a storage capacity of 545 crore litres (5.45 billion litres), reached a water level of 195.10 feet, surpassing its capacity and spilling over at around 6 AM.

The BMC confirmed that the lake’s water is non-potable and is primarily used for industrial purposes and non-potable uses in the Aarey Milk Colony. Despite being a significant water body in the city, the lake’s overflow does not impact the potable water supply, which is sourced from other reservoirs such as Bhatsa, Upper Vaitarna, and Tansa. This overflow event occurred approximately 20 days earlier than in 2024, highlighting the intensity of the current monsoon season. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Mumbai, forecasting more heavy rain and potential waterlogging in the coming days.

Residents are advised to exercise caution, stay updated with weather alerts, and avoid venturing into low-lying areas prone to flooding. Authorities are monitoring the situation closely to manage any potential disruptions caused by the ongoing monsoon rains.
