The final 76-kilometre stretch of the Mumbai-Nagpur Expressway, officially known as the Hindu Hridaysamrat Balasaheb Thackeray Maharashtra Samruddhi Mahamarg, was inaugurated on June 5, 2025. This completion reduces the travel time between Mumbai and Nagpur from approximately 16 hours to just 8 hours, enhancing connectivity across the state.
The newly opened segment between Igatpuri in Nashik district and Amane in Thane district includes India’s longest road tunnel, a 7.8-kilometre passage through the challenging Kasara Ghat. This engineering feat significantly cuts the commute time between Igatpuri and Kasara, navigating the difficult terrain efficiently. The expressway, spanning 701 kilometres, traverses 10 districts and over 390 villages, enhancing regional connectivity and development. Designed for speeds up to 150 km/h, it features 33 major bridges, 65 flyovers, and six tunnels, facilitating smoother and faster travel.
Beyond improving travel times, the Samruddhi Expressway is poised to stimulate economic growth by connecting 24 districts with major ports like JNPT and the upcoming Vadhavan Port. This linkage is expected to boost trade and industrial activities across the state. The expressway also incorporates eco-friendly initiatives, including the planting of over 3.3 million native trees and the integration of solar power projects aiming to generate over 500 MW. Additionally, a vast gas pipeline is being laid alongside the expressway to drive industrial decarbonization, aligning with sustainable development goals.
Despite the expressway’s completion, access from Mumbai remains a challenge due to ongoing widening work on the 23-kilometre stretch of the Mumbai-Nashik Highway between Magathane and Vadpe. This delay is causing traffic congestion, particularly as vehicles from Mumbai, Thane, Kalyan, and Bhiwandi use this under-construction route to access the expressway. The Maharashtra government has announced plans to connect the expressway to the upcoming Vadhavan Port, enhancing its role as a key infrastructure corridor. This integration is part of a broader strategy to promote port-led development and improve logistics across the state.
Looking ahead, the state government is also planning the Shaktipeeth Expressway, aimed at transforming the Marathwada region by providing better connectivity and fostering economic development. This project is expected to benefit farmers and industries, further contributing to Maharashtra’s growth. The completion of the Mumbai-Nagpur Expressway marks a significant milestone in Maharashtra’s infrastructure development, promising enhanced connectivity, economic growth, and sustainable development across the state.
