Mumbai-Nagpur Expressways Final Stretch to Open on June 5

The Mumbai-Nagpur Samruddhi Expressway, a monumental infrastructure project aimed at enhancing connectivity between Maharashtra’s two major cities, is set to become fully operational on June 5, 2025.

The final 76-kilometre stretch, connecting Igatpuri to Amne, will be inaugurated by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis in a ceremony at Igatpuri. This completion marks the end of a significant journey for the expressway, which spans a total of 701 kilometres. The project, initiated during Fadnavis’s first term as Chief Minister, faced numerous challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic and complex terrain. Despite these obstacles, the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) successfully delivered the project, with the final stretch overcoming the rugged terrain of the Sahyadri mountain ranges.

The Igatpuri-Amne section is particularly notable for its engineering feats. It includes five tunnels, with the 7.78-kilometre tunnel at Igatpuri being the longest in Maharashtra. This tunnel significantly reduces the travel time between Igatpuri and Kasara to just eight minutes. Additionally, the stretch features the tallest bridge at Khardi, with 85-metre pillars in the valley, and the longest viaduct spanning 2.3 kilometres, with piers reaching up to 84 metres. In an effort to promote local culture and aesthetics, MSRDC has adorned the tunnels along this stretch with Warli tribal art. This initiative not only enhances the visual appeal of the expressway but also preserves and showcases Maharashtra’s rich cultural heritage.

The completion of this final stretch will reduce the travel time between Mumbai and Nagpur from approximately 16 hours to just eight hours. This significant reduction in travel time is expected to boost tourism, trade, and overall economic activity between the two cities. With the expressway now fully operational, commuters can enjoy a seamless, high-speed journey across Maharashtra, benefiting from the state’s commitment to infrastructure development and cultural preservation.
