Mumbai’s commitment to sustainable urban mobility has received a significant boost with the introduction of electric vehicle (EV) battery swapping stations at 25 metro and six monorail stations.
This initiative, launched by the Mumbai Metro Operation Corporation Ltd. (MMMOCL) in collaboration with Honda Power Pack Energy India Pvt Ltd, aims to enhance the city’s green mobility infrastructure and support the growing adoption of electric two- and three-wheelers. The battery swapping system allows EV users to replace depleted Mobile Power Pack (MPP) batteries with fully charged ones in under two minutes, facilitating efficient and uninterrupted travel. Each MPP unit has a capacity of 1.5 kWh, with a usable capacity of 1.31 kWh, and weighs approximately 10.2 kilograms. The process is designed to be quick and user-friendly, ensuring minimal downtime for commuters and delivery personnel.
Strategically located at key metro and monorail stations—including Dahisar East, Andheri West, and Chembur—the swapping stations are accessible to daily riders, fleet operators, and delivery agents. This widespread availability aims to address the challenges of range anxiety and long charging times, which have been barriers to EV adoption in urban settings.
The collaboration marks the first major implementation of MMMOCL’s EV Policy, approved during the 29th Board Meeting chaired by MMRDA Commissioner Dr. Sanjay Mukherjee. The policy sets the groundwork for sustainable transit solutions in the city, aligning with the state’s broader goals of reducing carbon emissions and promoting clean energy.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis emphasized the government’s commitment to accelerating electric mobility across the state. He noted that the installation of battery swapping stations at metro and monorail nodes would support delivery personnel, daily riders, and fleet operators in making the EV shift. This initiative exemplifies how smart infrastructure and green technology can converge for public benefit.
Deputy CM Eknath Shinde, also the MMRDA Chairman, highlighted that green infrastructure is not a luxury but a necessity for the state’s future. He commended the collaboration between MMMOCL and Honda for advancing the state’s EV mission and building an integrated, climate-resilient mobility system that prioritizes citizens and the environment.
Dr. Sanjay Mukherjee, Chairman of MMMOCL, expressed pride in the partnership with Honda Power Pack Energy India Pvt Ltd, stating that the initiative lays the foundation for a sustainable, low-emission urban ecosystem. The first e-swap centre has already been installed at Dahisar East Metro Station, with plans for further expansion across the city.
This development positions Mumbai as a leader in integrating EV infrastructure into public transport systems, setting a precedent for other cities in India and beyond. By facilitating seamless battery swapping, the initiative not only supports the adoption of electric vehicles but also contributes to the city’s broader environmental and sustainability goals.
