Mumbai is expected to face intense heat on October 9, with the India Meteorological Department issuing a yellow alert for heatwave conditions in isolated pockets of the city and surrounding areas and forecasting a maximum temperature of around 37°C.
The minimum temperature is likely to remain near 25°C, according to the IMD. The island city recorded a maximum of 37.6°C and a minimum of 24.7°C in the preceding 24-hour period, indicating that the heat is already building as the Southwest Monsoon withdraws from the region.
The IMD said the monsoon withdrawal continued during the week, with the withdrawal line extending through Supaul, Ranchi, Raipur, Brahmapuri, Parbhani, Baramati and Harnai. The agency also reported weak monsoon conditions over Konkan and Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, Marathwada and Gujarat.
The alert applies to isolated pockets rather than the entire city, but the expected temperature has implications for outdoor workers, commuters, older residents and people with existing health conditions. A yellow alert signals the need for residents and local authorities to remain watchful as heat conditions intensify.
Mumbai’s air quality was in the moderate category on Friday, with the city recording an overall Air Quality Index reading of 110 on the Central Pollution Control Board’s SAMEER app. Air in the moderate category may cause minor breathing discomfort to sensitive people.
Deonar recorded the highest AQI among the listed Mumbai monitoring stations at 152, followed by Colaba at 133 and Chembur at 122. Mazgaon also recorded an AQI of 122, while Sewri stood at 106 and Andheri East at 105. BKC recorded 93, Borivali East 88, Byculla 87 and Mulund 59.
Across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, Thane and Navi Mumbai each recorded an AQI of 96, while Kalyan recorded 90. The variation between monitoring stations shows that air quality conditions differ across neighbourhoods, with industrial, traffic-heavy and construction-linked areas potentially recording higher readings than less congested locations.
Maharashtra’s highest maximum temperature during the week was recorded in Amravati, which touched 39°C on Wednesday, 6.4°C above normal for the city, according to the IMD’s latest state weather update. Yavatmal recorded 38.2°C, followed by Akola at 37.9°C. Jalgaon and Solapur recorded 37.6°C each, while Wardha reached 37.6°C and Chandrapur 37.2°C.
Several parts of Vidarbha also recorded temperatures above 36°C. Buldhana reached 36.5°C, Nagpur 36.4°C, Washim 36°C, Brahmapuri 35.6°C and Gondia 34°C. The IMD’s immediate forecast for Mumbai remains centred on the heatwave alert, the expected 37°C maximum and continued weak monsoon conditions over the wider region.
