Mumbai Firecracker Ban Takes Effect on Public Roads Until December 4

Mumbai firecracker ban notice for public roads during the festive season

Mumbai Police have banned the bursting of firecrackers, fireworks and rockets on public streets, roads and other public areas across the Brihanmumbai Police Commissionerate, with the restriction in force until midnight on December 4 unless withdrawn earlier.

The order also prohibits the use of laser lights, high-intensity lumen lights and beams within the police commissionerate’s jurisdiction. The restrictions took effect on October 6, ahead of the festive season, including Navratri and Diwali, when the use of fireworks and high-intensity lighting generally increases across the city.

Mumbai Police issued the order following directions from the Bombay High Court on September 22 in suo motu public interest litigation No. 1 of 2026. The court directed authorities to impose a total ban on bursting firecrackers on public streets and roads and to take steps to prevent air and noise pollution caused by fireworks.

The court also directed authorities to prohibit laser lights, high-intensity lumen lights and beams. Acting on those directions, the police order covers firecrackers, fireworks, rockets and similar items used on public streets, roads and other public areas within the Brihanmumbai Police Commissionerate.

The restrictions apply to public spaces under the commissionerate and do not otherwise specify a general ban on every form of fireworks use across all locations in Mumbai. The order, as reported by the Times of India, specifically identifies public streets, roads and other public areas as the locations where the prohibited activities cannot take place.

People who contravene the order may face penal action under applicable laws. Mumbai Police have cited the Noise Pollution (Regulation and Control) Rules, 2000, the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986, the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, the Explosives Act, 1884, and other relevant statutes as possible legal provisions for action.

The police have directed that the order be publicised at public places, courts and government offices. It is also to be announced through loudspeakers and megaphones and published through available media platforms. The restrictions will remain in force until midnight on December 4 unless the order is withdrawn earlier.
