Mumbai fire response outside a residential building in Kurla West

A Mumbai fire in the electrical duct of Kohinoor HDIL Building No. 5 in Kurla West injured nine people early on Tuesday, October 20, with eight suffering smoke inhalation and another sustaining a right-leg injury. All nine were admitted to Rajawadi Hospital and were reported to be in stable condition.

The incident was reported at around 6.53 am near Kohinoor School, according to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s Mumbai Fire Brigade Control Room. The fire was confined to electrical wiring and installations inside the building’s electrical duct, along with iron doors on various floors of the ground-plus-12-storey structure.

Fire brigade personnel extinguished the blaze at around 7.21 am. The emergency response also involved the Mumbai Police, the concerned electricity distribution company, 108 ambulance services and BMC ward staff, according to information released by the civic authorities.

The injured residents were taken to Rajawadi Hospital in Ghatkopar. The eight people treated for smoke inhalation were identified as Eshan Ahemad, 30; Mohamad Shaik, 5; Farina Bono, 27; Ejas Ahemad, 65; Farin Shaikh, 18; Naidaya Shaik, 14; Kalima Saha, 45; and Alina Shaik, 17.

The ninth injured resident, Jahed Ali Shaik, 55, suffered an injury to his right leg and was also admitted to the hospital. The medical officer at Rajawadi Hospital informed the fire brigade that all nine patients were stable. The latest update cited by the report was issued by the Mumbai Fire Brigade Control Room at 10.40 am.

The incident placed the building’s electrical duct and installations at the centre of the emergency response. However, details about what triggered the fire were not immediately available. The supplied civic update also did not specify the extent of damage to individual flats, common areas or electrical services in the building.

The response required coordination between the fire brigade, hospital services, police, electricity officials and municipal ward staff. Such coordination is necessary when a fire in a high-rise residential building produces smoke movement through internal service spaces and requires residents to be treated for inhalation injuries.

In a separate incident on Tuesday morning, a fire was reported at Amar Sons Store on Bhulabhai Desai Road near Breach Candy Hospital in Mahalaxmi. The Mumbai Fire Brigade received the call at around 8.01 am and classified it as a Level 1 fire call at 8.20 am. Further details about that incident were not included in the civic update cited by the source.
