Mumbai FDA Suspends Borivali Hotel Licence Over Rat-in-Dosa Complaint

The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration has suspended the food licence of Radhakrishna Hotel in Borivali West after a customer allegedly found a dead rat inside a Mysore masala dosa served at the restaurant, making the complaint the subject of formal regulatory action in Mumbai.

FDA Joint Commissioner (Food) Santosh Kamble confirmed the suspension to Mid-Day on September 30. The complaint had earlier been forwarded to the FDA by Borivali Police for appropriate action.

According to the complaint, a family had ordered South Indian food at the hotel and the customer allegedly discovered the rodent after eating a few bites of the dosa. The diner reportedly vomited following the discovery. The complaint was then taken to Borivali Police, which referred it to the food regulator.

The suspension means Radhakrishna Hotel cannot continue food-related operations under the suspended licence unless the FDA permits further activity after regulatory proceedings. The department is expected to examine the circumstances surrounding the complaint and assess the establishment’s compliance with food-safety requirements.

The reported incident has placed attention on hygiene, pest-control and food-storage practices in commercial kitchens. These measures are part of the operating conditions that food establishments are expected to maintain while preparing and serving meals to the public. The FDA has recently intensified food-safety inspections across Mumbai during the festive season.

The department has also taken action against several eateries over alleged violations involving hygiene, pest control, food storage and preparation practices. The latest suspension therefore comes amid a wider enforcement drive rather than as an isolated inspection announcement.

The hotel’s response was not available despite attempts to contact its representatives before publication. The FDA’s further proceedings will determine the circumstances of the complaint and whether the establishment meets the conditions required for food-related operations to resume.
