Mumbai FDA Suspends 10 Eatery Licences Over Hygiene Violations

Mumbai FDA inspection at a food establishment near JJ Hospital

The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration has suspended the licences of 10 food establishments in Mumbai after inspections found food safety and hygiene violations, including unclean premises, pest infestations, inadequate worker hygiene and improper food storage. The action covers eateries at Islam Gymkhana, canteens at JJ Hospital and establishments near colleges, hospitals and busy commercial areas.

The FDA said the inspections also identified deficiencies in licences and registrations. Several establishments lacked required records, including medical certificates and food safety training documents for workers. The action was part of a wider Maharashtra crackdown on prohibited food products and suspected violations of food safety requirements.

Among the establishments facing licence suspension are Huma Caterer at Islam Gymkhana, Nawab Juice Centre at Islam Gymkhana near Marine Lines station, Central Canteen on the JJ Hospital premises and Abrar Maiku Khan at Abrar Kirana Store near JJ Hospital. The list also includes F3 Corporate Hospitality Services Pvt Ltd at DJ Sanghvi College of Engineering in Vile Parle.

Other establishments named in the action are La Pinoz Pizza in Santacruz, Narayan Dosa at Opera House, Golden Star Restaurant at Charni Road, Milkoze Dairy Products in Kandivali and Paliwal Dairy in Charkop. The FDA did not provide, in the report, details of the duration of each suspension or the conditions required for the licences to be restored.

The enforcement action formed part of a statewide operation in which officials seized stock worth Rs 79.29 lakh and three vehicles in connection with prohibited food products. The total value of those seizures was placed at Rs 1.09 crore, while 13 people were arrested and 12 first information reports were registered, according to the FDA statement.

Officials also reported action in other parts of Maharashtra. In the Nashik division, prohibited products worth Rs 92.71 lakh were seized during operations in Jalgaon, Dhule, Nashik and Nandurbar. In the Konkan division, seizures exceeded Rs 10.88 lakh, while enforcement action was also reported in Pune, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and Nagpur divisions.

Separately, the FDA acted against 53,726 kg of food stock and 6,098 litres of milk and toddy suspected to be substandard, adulterated or wrongly labelled in the Konkan, Pune, Nagpur and Amravati divisions. The seized or detained stock included areca nut, milk, paneer, bhagar, farsan, toddy and soybean oil. The value of this stock was estimated at Rs 1.39 crore. Further action will depend on the FDA’s enforcement process and compliance findings at the affected establishments.
