Mumbai’s Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has launched a comprehensive initiative to remove abandoned and unfit vehicles from city roads, aiming to alleviate traffic congestion and enhance public safety. This move aligns with the city’s broader efforts to create more sustainable, equitable, and pedestrian-friendly urban spaces.
The BMC’s intensified drive, announced in June 2025, focuses on clearing vehicles that have been left unattended for extended periods, obstructing traffic flow, and posing potential safety hazards. These vehicles often serve as breeding grounds for mosquitoes and shelters for anti-social elements, further exacerbating public health concerns. To streamline the process, the BMC has appointed contractors responsible for identifying, towing, and scrapping over 3,000 abandoned vehicles across Mumbai’s wards.
The contractors are tasked with issuing notices, obtaining necessary clearances, and ensuring compliance with legal procedures. The revenue generated from the scrapping process will be deposited into municipal funds, contributing to the city’s resources. In addition to the contractor-led efforts, the BMC has been proactive at the ward level. For instance, in Matunga, the F-North ward removed 54 abandoned vehicles and issued notices to 154 owners to clear their defunct vehicles. This initiative has improved traffic flow and addressed safety concerns in the area.
The BMC’s comprehensive approach includes appointing nodal officers at each ward to coordinate between the BMC, police, and contractors, ensuring efficient execution of the drive. The overarching goal is not only to fine vehicle owners but also to decongest roads and ensure safe, hassle-free commuting for all citizens. This initiative reflects Mumbai’s commitment to creating a zero-net carbon, eco-friendly, and sustainable urban environment. By addressing the issue of abandoned vehicles, the city aims to enhance public convenience, reduce pollution, and promote a more equitable urban landscape.
