Mumbai Airport to Launch Prepaid Auto Rickshaw Service at Terminal 2

Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) is poised to enhance commuter convenience with the introduction of a prepaid auto rickshaw service at Terminal 2 (T2) by the end of June 2025.

This initiative aims to address long-standing concerns over fare disputes and ensure a transparent and reliable transportation option for passengers. Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL) is actively working on the necessary infrastructure to support the new service. Dedicated counters for issuing prepaid receipts are being established, along with facilities such as seating for differently-abled passengers and designated areas for luggage trolleys. These enhancements are designed to streamline the passenger experience and accommodate the growing number of commuters opting for auto rickshaws.

The introduction of the prepaid auto service comes in response to numerous complaints from passengers regarding overcharging and refusal to use meters by some auto rickshaw drivers. The prepaid model will rely on destination-based fare charts approved by the Regional Transport Office (RTO), with all data integrated into updated fare software. This system aims to eliminate fare manipulation and provide passengers with a clear understanding of the charges before commencing their journey. The service has received approvals from the state government, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Transport Authority (MMRTA), and other relevant bodies. Maharashtra’s Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik had earlier confirmed that all clearances were secured and that it was now up to the airport operator to act on the launch plan.

MIAL is expected to oversee the full operation of the prepaid auto service, with assistance from the Mumbai traffic police for enforcement. An NGO named Happy to Help has also offered operational support, which MIAL may accept for smoother management. This collaboration aims to ensure the effective implementation and operation of the service. While the initial rollout is focused on Terminal 2, there are plans to extend the prepaid auto rickshaw service to Terminal 1 (T1) in the near future. This expansion will further enhance the accessibility and convenience of transportation options for passengers arriving at both terminals.

The introduction of the prepaid auto rickshaw service at Mumbai Airport’s Terminal 2 marks a significant step towards improving the commuter experience and ensuring fare transparency. By addressing long-standing issues and collaborating with various stakeholders, MIAL aims to provide passengers with a reliable and hassle-free transportation option, contributing to the overall enhancement of Mumbai’s public transport infrastructure.
