Mormugao Port Sets Iron Ore Loading Record

In a major operational breakthrough, Mormugao Port in Goa set a new benchmark for iron ore pellet loading with Delta Ports Mormugao Terminal Private Ltd (DMTPL) achieving a single-day load of 30,581 metric tons. The record-setting operation, carried out on MV Vishva Chetna, underscores the port’s rising stature as a key player in India’s mineral export supply chain.

On June 16, Berth No. X at Mormugao Port witnessed a landmark moment when MV Vishva Chetna was loaded with 30,581 metric tons of iron ore pellets within a single day. This shipment, totalling 67,500 metric tons bound for Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Private Limited (MRPPL), marks the port’s highest single-day iron ore loading, demonstrating a leap in cargo handling capability.

The feat was achieved by DMTPL, the Public-Private Partnership operator managing the terminal operations at Mormugao Port Authority (MPA). Officials emphasised that the milestone reflects seamless coordination between the terminal and port authority teams. The operational synergy, enabled by improved logistics planning and mechanised handling systems, enabled this high-volume movement to occur without delays, despite monsoon-related port challenges.

The MPA Chairperson praised the effort, calling it a demonstration of the terminal’s readiness to serve the rising demands of international trade. As iron ore exports remain a vital part of Goa’s maritime economy, such milestones boost investor confidence and position the port as a competitive mineral logistics hub on India’s western coast. The record also signals port resilience and digital tracking efficiency.

With DMTPL taking charge under a public-private framework, infrastructure upgrades at Mormugao have accelerated. Faster loading cycles, deeper berths, and dedicated bulk cargo routes are helping ports like Mormugao handle global demand more efficiently. The success is seen as an early indicator of a more modern, performance-driven port ecosystem that will attract further bulk commodity exporters and logistics operators.

Mormugao Port’s record-setting iron ore pellet loading is more than a logistical feat. With improved coordination, infrastructure, and handling capacity, ports like Mormugao are becoming key players in the global mineral trade. This milestone cements Goa’s role in the maritime economy and sets the stage for sustained high-performance cargo operations.
