Actor Dino Morea was questioned by the Mumbai Police Economic Offences Wing in connection with alleged financial irregularities in the Mithi River desilting project and was allowed to leave afterwards, a senior Mumbai Police official said on Friday. Morea separately denied reports that he had been detained or arrested.
The development followed reports circulated by several portals claiming that the actor had been arrested after questioning by the EOW. In a WhatsApp response to Mid-Day, Morea denied those reports, saying they were “not true”.
A senior EOW officer said Morea was being questioned on the basis of certain leads in the ongoing investigation. The officer added that any further decision would be communicated as the inquiry progresses.
At around 7 pm, a senior Mumbai Police official said Morea had been allowed to go after questioning. The official said the actor could be called again, depending on the needs and requirements of the investigation, and that any further process would be carried out as per law.
The EOW is examining alleged financial irregularities linked to the Mithi River desilting project. Morea’s name has figured in the investigation in connection with financial transactions being examined by the agency, according to the report.
The case centres on the use and movement of funds associated with desilting work on the Mithi, a major drainage channel running through Mumbai. Desilting is undertaken to improve the river’s carrying capacity and reduce the risk of flooding, particularly during heavy monsoon rainfall. The project therefore has implications for municipal contracting, expenditure oversight and the city’s flood-management infrastructure.
The reports of Morea’s alleged arrest were not independently confirmed by the EOW at the time of filing. The available police statement confirmed questioning and release, rather than detention or arrest. The investigation remains underway, and the actor may be required to appear again if called by the agency.
The next steps will depend on the EOW’s examination of the leads and financial transactions connected with the project. Police officials said any further action would follow the requirements of the investigation and applicable law.
