Marco Rubio Visits Reliance Jamnagar Refinery for Energy Talks

Reliance Jamnagar refinery complex visited by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio visited Reliance Industries’ Jamnagar refinery complex in Gujarat, where Chairman and Managing Director Mukesh Ambani and Executive Director Anant Ambani presented the company’s conventional energy, new-energy and digital infrastructure investments. The visit brought India-US discussions on energy security, technology and commercial partnerships into one of India’s largest industrial environments.

Rubio and US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor were taken on a tour of the refinery complex, which Reliance describes as the world’s largest refinery. According to a media statement issued by Reliance Industries, the visitors were shown the scale of the facility, its advanced technology and its integrated operations.

The delegation was also briefed on Reliance’s New Energy giga-factories, which are being commissioned in phases, and data centres that are under construction. The company presented the Jamnagar complex as a location for deep technology, innovation and advanced manufacturing, extending its role beyond conventional petroleum refining.

The discussions covered the global energy landscape and possible commercial partnerships in conventional and new energy. Reliance said the exchange included reliable and affordable energy supplies, technological advances, resilient supply chains and the investment needed to meet growing demand.

The meeting also addressed the growing connection between energy and digital infrastructure. Dependable power supply is a central operating requirement for data centres, while the expansion of digital services is increasing demand for large-scale computing and supporting infrastructure. Reliance’s presentation linked its energy and digital investments through this shared infrastructure requirement.

Mukesh Ambani and Anant Ambani outlined potential areas of collaboration with US companies, drawing on what the company described as complementary strengths in technology, engineering and advanced manufacturing. The interaction was presented as an opportunity to exchange industry perspectives and identify areas of mutual commercial interest.

Rubio arrived in Mumbai on Tuesday and held talks with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on the India-US strategic partnership and negotiations on a proposed trade deal. He also paid tribute to the victims of the November 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, including six American nationals who died in the attacks.

His Gujarat visit came amid wider discussions on energy commerce, including India’s imports of Russian petroleum and the possibility of expanding purchases of American energy resources. Reliance’s statement did not announce a specific agreement, investment commitment or project timeline arising from the Jamnagar meeting.
