Assam Rifles and Indian Army teams detected and neutralised 27 improvised explosive devices along an eight-kilometre stretch of the Shangkhalok–Pilong road in Manipur’s Kamjong district, near the India–Myanmar border, according to the Army’s Spear Corps.
The devices were found along the route used by local border communities and security forces conducting patrols in the area. The Army said the operation prevented attempts by what it described as “anti-national elements” to disrupt peace and helped safeguard communities living near the border.
The Army has not identified any organisation responsible for placing the IEDs and has not disclosed whether the devices were intended to target civilians, security personnel or vehicles. The force also did not provide details of the devices’ construction, the precise locations where they were detected or the duration of the operation.
The Shangkhalok–Pilong road runs through a rugged and forested part of Kamjong, a district adjoining Myanmar. Its condition and accessibility are important to residents in border settlements, while the same route supports the movement and patrolling of security forces. The discovery of explosives along an eight-kilometre section has therefore affected both civilian access and security operations in the border belt.
Kamjong has remained tense following the killing of four Tangkhul Naga civilians near Pilong village last month. The latest operation comes in a sector where difficult terrain and limited state presence have historically made it easier for armed groups, weapons and supplies to move across remote routes.
The Army said the operation reaffirmed the vigilance of security forces in safeguarding the border. It did not announce any arrests, identify suspects or provide details of further investigations into the planting of the IEDs. The next steps will depend on security agencies’ assessment of the route and the wider border area.
