An 18-year-old B.Tech first-year student drowned after falling into a quarry pit at Malkaram in Jawahar Nagar of Telangana’s Medchal-Malkajgiri district on Friday evening, after visiting the location with 11 other engineering students for photographs.

The deceased was identified as Pawan Sai. According to a report by Deccan Chronicle, the group had visited the quarry after seeing Instagram reels that presented the location as a scenic spot for taking photographs.

The students were at the quarry when Pawan Sai sat on a rock and attempted to touch the water. He accidentally slipped and fell into the quarry pit, the report said. His friends alerted the Disaster Response Force after the incident.

Disaster Response Force teams reached the location and began a search operation. Rescuers searched the quarry for nearly two hours before locating and recovering the student’s body.

The incident highlights the risks of entering quarry sites for recreation or photography, particularly where water-filled pits and uneven rocky surfaces are present. The report does not provide details on whether the site had fencing, warning signs, restricted access or other safety measures.

Jawahar Nagar police registered a case following the death. The body was shifted to Gandhi Hospital for a post-mortem examination, according to the report.

The recovery operation was carried out by the Disaster Response Force after the student’s companions raised the alarm. The police investigation and post-mortem examination are the next official steps recorded in the report.
