Madhavaram Dairy Expansion Gets Push as Vijay Reviews ₹152 Crore Project

Madhavaram dairy facility and milk distribution infrastructure in north Chennai

Tamil Nadu chief minister C Joseph Vijay reviewed the construction of a new automated dairy in Madhavaram and directed officials to expedite the ₹152.26 crore project during a series of official engagements in Chennai on Wednesday, according to a report by the Times of India. The proposed facility is designed to handle seven lakh litres of milk a day, significantly above the capacity of the existing Madhavaram dairy.

Vijay also inaugurated a ₹2.23 crore auxiliary building at the Aavin State Central Laboratory in Madhavaram. The new facility is equipped for drinking water and wastewater testing in accordance with standards of the Bureau of Indian Standards, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India and the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board.

The existing Madhavaram dairy handles around 4.5 lakh litres of milk each day and supplies milk across north Chennai through an average of 120 vehicles. The proposed automated dairy is intended to add processing capacity to this distribution network, although the report did not specify its completion date or the stages remaining in construction.

The projects are linked to the functioning of a public dairy supply system that serves a large urban area. The current facility’s daily output and vehicle-based distribution indicate the scale of logistics required to move milk across north Chennai. The new laboratory building will support testing related to drinking water and wastewater, while the dairy expansion is focused on increasing milk-handling capacity.

During the visit, Vijay inspected the Madhavaram dairy and reviewed the progress of the automated facility. Officials were directed to accelerate the construction work. No revised timeline, additional funding requirement or operational details were provided in the report.

Earlier in the day, Vijay visited the MLA office in the Perambur constituency and received petitions from residents concerning civic grievances. The office has a dedicated team and an e-Seva centre for receiving and processing complaints, with the stated aim of fast-tracking issues for immediate redressal.

The grievance office and e-Seva centre represent an administrative channel for residents to submit complaints locally rather than relying only on central government offices. The report did not specify the number or nature of petitions received, the departments responsible for resolving them, or the disposal rate for complaints previously submitted through the centre.

Vijay later attended the passing-out parade of the 14th batch of trainee deputy superintendents of police at the Tamil Nadu Police Academy. The 25 officers, comprising 11 women and 14 men, completed 52 weeks of training covering law, investigation, police administration, internal security, intelligence, community policing, cybercrime, the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems, modern policing technology, physical training and field work.

T Aneesh Pradeep received the Sword of Honour, Chief Minister’s Trophy and gold medal for overall excellence. O Karthika received the silver medal and P S Divya the bronze medal. The report said other trophies and medals were also presented to trainees who performed strongly in individual categories. The next reported step for the Madhavaram dairy project is the expedited construction directed by the chief minister.
