LuLu Hypermarket Chennai Opens to Crowds at Metro Station

Crowds at LuLu Hypermarket Chennai inside Shenoy Nagar Metro Station

LuLu Hypermarket Chennai opened at Shenoy Nagar Metro Station on October 12, drawing large crowds and checkout queues of up to two hours as shoppers explored a retail complex combining groceries, fresh food, fashion, electronics and daily essentials under one roof.

Spread across approximately one lakh square feet, the facility is being billed as India’s first and largest hypermarket within a metro station. It includes a 56,000-square-foot supermarket and a 50,000-square-foot department store housing LuLu Fashion Store and LuLu Connect. The complex has 28 checkout counters and parking for more than 1,000 vehicles.

The store was inaugurated by Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly Speaker JCD Prabhakar in the presence of LuLu Group Chairman MA Yusuff Ali, ministers, legislators and company representatives. The opening formed part of LuLu’s expansion into Chennai’s metro network, with a second-format outlet, LuLu Daily, also launched at Chennai Central Metro Station.

LuLu Daily covers 35,000 square feet and focuses on fresh market produce, groceries and everyday essentials. Together, the two outlets introduce large-format retail spaces directly within or alongside important public transport locations, linking routine shopping with metro access and high-footfall urban neighbourhoods.

Abdul Saleem, LuLu’s regional manager, said the company selected Shenoy Nagar because it is one of Chennai’s oldest residential neighbourhoods and is located in what he described as the heart of the city. He said the hypermarket could accommodate approximately 25,000 customers each day.

The Shenoy Nagar store offers fresh produce, meat, seafood, cheeses, baked goods, prepared food and other grocery categories, alongside fashion, footwear and electronics. Its food facilities include a deli, hot kitchen, bakery, nut roastery and salad bar. On opening day, shoppers bought freshly baked bread, pastries, cakes, biryani, curries, salads, cheeses and other deli products in large quantities.

The scale of the opening also exposed the operational pressures that accompany a major retail launch in a dense urban setting. Crowds made it difficult to move through the store, while the volume of shoppers extended checkout times. The experience was amplified by the range of products available, allowing customers to combine essential purchases with browsing across several other categories.

For some visitors, the store’s appeal also came from familiarity. LuLu is already known to shoppers in Kerala and the Gulf, giving the Chennai opening an element of recognition beyond its retail offer. The company has operated in Coimbatore for three years, and the Shenoy Nagar outlet is its second location in Tamil Nadu.

The opening provides an early indication of the demand that large-format retail can generate when placed near established residential areas and metro infrastructure. The immediate rush, however, reflected an inaugural event rather than normal operating conditions. The store’s longer-term performance will depend on how visitor volumes, access and checkout operations settle after the opening-week crowds ease.
