Lohapul Bridge Reconstruction Boosts Nagpurs Railway Infrastructure

Nagpur is witnessing a significant infrastructure development with the ongoing construction of a new bridge adjacent to the historic Lohapul railway bridge. This project aims to support the expansion of the third and fourth railway lines between Nagpur and Wardha, enhancing connectivity and alleviating congestion in the region. The existing Lohapul bridge has been closed to traffic to facilitate the construction of the new bridge.

Currently, work is underway to shift underground utilities and lay a new drainage line, with plans to commence concreting of the foundation shortly. The project, estimated at ₹3 crore, is being executed by CS Construction India Pvt. Ltd. under the Central Railway’s construction department. This new bridge is a crucial component of the nearly complete third and fourth railway line expansion between Nagpur and Wardha. The section from Sindi to Selu Road is nearing completion, and the line now extends up to Ajni. Only 17 km remains—12 km from Selu Road to Sevagram, 2.5 km from Sevagram to Wardha, and 2.5 km from Ajni to Nagpur station. The new bridge near Lohapul is vital for supporting these additional tracks, especially between Ajni and Nagpur station.

Unlike push box-type bridges, the new structure is a traditional design. The initial phase is nearly complete, with iron rod meshwork laid for the foundation. Officials anticipate that once concreting begins, work will progress more rapidly. Weather permitting, the bridge is expected to be completed in approximately three to four months. The expansion of the railway lines is part of a broader effort to enhance transportation infrastructure in the Vidarbha region. The fourth railway line between Wardha and Ballarshah has been approved to fast-track connectivity in Vidarbha, with an investment of ₹3,399 crore. This project aims to improve the transport of commodities such as coal, cement, gypsum, agricultural items, and petroleum products, benefiting nearly 19.74 lakh people and generating 74 lakh human-days of employment during construction.

Completion is targeted for the fiscal year 2029-30 . The reconstruction of the Lohapul bridge is a pivotal development in Nagpur’s infrastructure landscape. Upon completion, it will not only facilitate the expansion of the railway lines but also contribute to the region’s economic growth by improving transportation efficiency and connectivity.
