A court in Kerala has sentenced a KSRTC driver to three years in prison and imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 for a 2018 crash in which two scooter riders waiting at a traffic signal were killed by a speeding bus in Aluva.
The Paravur Principal Assistant Sessions Court sentenced A.K. Unni, a driver attached to the Mala KSRTC depot. Principal Assistant Sessions Judge Vincy Ann Peter Joseph delivered the sentence in the case involving the deaths of Cherai residents Arjun K. Shaji and Abhishek.
The crash took place at the Thottakkattukara junction in Aluva on August 10, 2018. According to the report, the two victims were waiting at a signal when the KSRTC bus approached at high speed and struck them. Both scooter riders died in the incident.
The case was registered by K.T. Muhammad Kabir, then a sub-inspector with the Aluva Traffic Unit. The investigation was conducted by Vishal Johnson, who was then the station house officer of Aluva East police station. Police subsequently filed the chargesheet before the court.
The prosecution was represented by Additional Public Prosecutor Advocate Deepa Manoj. The court’s sentence follows the completion of the police investigation and trial proceedings into the crash.
The case highlights the legal consequences that can follow fatal collisions involving public transport vehicles, particularly at signalised urban junctions where pedestrians, cyclists and two-wheeler users remain exposed to moving traffic. The report, however, does not provide details of the specific offences under which the driver was convicted, the route operated by the bus, or the compensation arrangements for the victims’ families.
The sentence is the latest formal development in a case that began with the 2018 crash at one of Aluva’s busy junctions. The court’s order concludes the reported trial-stage proceedings against the driver, with the prison term and fine forming the punishment announced in the case.
