A 24-year-old man was killed after his speeding Kia car crashed into an air-release valve on the Krishna drinking water pipeline near Nagole Metro Station in Hyderabad early Tuesday, damaging the network and disrupting water supply to several localities.
The deceased was identified as Vineeth, a resident of Hayathnagar. The crash occurred at around 3 am near Metro Pillar Nos. 813 and 814 on the Uppal-Nagole route. The impact damaged the pipeline’s air-release valve, sending water more than 30 feet into the air, reportedly above the metro track.
Thousands of litres of water flowed onto the road for nearly four hours, flooding nearby areas and causing severe traffic congestion around the accident site. The incident brought together emergency services and water-supply officials at a location where the pipeline, arterial road traffic and metro infrastructure operate in close proximity.
Police and fire services personnel reached the spot after receiving information about the crash. Officials from the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board then began emergency repair work to restore the damaged pipeline.
The damage reportedly affected drinking water supply to BN Reddy Nagar, Uppal, Vanasthalipuram, Ramanthapur, Beerappagadda, Autonagar, Prakash Nagar, Begumpet, Padmaraonagar, Secunderabad, Cantonment, Lalaguda, Addagutta, Nallagutta, Mettuguda, Vaishalinagar, Meerpet, Badangpet, Balapur and Marredpally.
The list covers neighbourhoods across Hyderabad and Secunderabad, indicating that the impact extended beyond the immediate crash location. Residents in the affected areas were requested to use water sparingly while repair work was under way.
HMWSSB officials said water tankers would be deployed wherever necessary to supply affected localities. The emergency measure is intended to address shortages until the damaged pipeline is repaired and normal supply is restored.
The incident also highlights the operational consequences of damage to a pressurised drinking water network. A single failure at the air-release valve led to substantial water discharge, road flooding, traffic congestion and disruption to a wide network of consumers. Authorities did not provide a restoration timeline in the report, but emergency repair work was continuing after the crash.
